The Awakening of Sunshine Girl by Paige McKenzie - ADVISABLE

McKenzie, Paige The Awakening of Sunshine Girl, 296 pages.  Weinstein Books (Perseus Group) 2016.  $16.00. Language: G (0- swears, 0- "f"); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG.

Sequel to "the Haunting of Sunshine Girl" this second installment sets 16-year-old Sunshine on a path of self-discovery.  After learning the truth of her heritage as a luiseach, an ancient race who co-exist with humans and help the dead pass on to the afterlife, Sunshine must learn to harness and control her power.  With spirits constantly being drawn to her, Sunshine realizes she can't delay her training any longer. Leaving all she knows and loves behind, Sunshine agrees to travel with her estranged father to a secret compound to begin her training.  Sunshine struggles to cope with her new relationship with her father, the discovery of what really happened to her birth mother, and the undeniable evidence that she is no ordinary luiseach.

I was initially intrigued but a little wary of the fact that the books are based on a popular YouTube series.  However, I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.  Sunshine's luiseach education is full of plot twists and some pretty creepy run-ins with spirits and demons.  With a little bit of romance thrown in, this supernatural thriller made for a great read!  I will warn that the book ends rather abruptly with a HUGE cliffhanger.  I am anxiously awaiting book 3 to see how everything turns out.  It has a PG rating due to the subject matter and Sunshine's interaction with the way many of the spirits died.
