Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer - ESSENTIAL

Archer, Micha   Daniel Finds a Poem  Unpaged. Nancy Paulsen Books (Penguin Random House), 2016. $16.99. PICTURE BOOK

Daniel knows his city park well, and all the animals who live there. When he sees a new sign on Monday about an upcoming Poetry in the Park program on Sunday, he wonders aloud what poetry is. The spider hears his question and explains in a short sentence what poetry means to him. Daniel spends the rest of the week asking his animal friends the same question, and by the end of the week, he has a poem to share.

Accompanied with collage illustrations, this is a simple, pattern story that includes days of the week and animals found in park setting, as well as an introduction to poetry through an appreciate of nature all around us. Teachers could tie it to curriculum in a variety of ways, including a beginning lesson on writing poetry, following the book's pattern to compose a class poem.
