The Bird King by Shaun Tan - ESSENTIAL

Tan, Shaun The Bird King an Artist’s notebook, pg. 127 Scholastic, 2010  Language: (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content-G; Violence: G;

We all wish we could look at an artist’s sketchbook.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see how the picture in their heads arrives on the page.  Shaun Tan a famous illustrator has done just that.  He has shared with us some of his sketchbook from pencil, to charcoal to full color illustrations.  He’s divided the book into sections:  untold stories; book, theater, and film; drawings from life, and notebooks.  The back has an index that explains each sketch and what it means and what it was drawn with.  I wish it could have been included with the sketch it would make the book easier to read. It was wonderful to see into the mind and thoughts of an artist  This is a fascinating book for an artist young and old alike.
