The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place by Julie Berry –ADVISABLE

Berry, Julie The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place 368 pgs. Roaring Brook Press, 2014. $15.99 Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: PG Violence: PG
The young girls of St. Etheldreda’s school don’t much care for their headmistress or her awful brother, but its better than life at their homes. When Mrs. Plackett and her brother drop dead at dinner one night, apparently from poison, the girls decide they must hide it, and pretend to the run the school themselves rather than go home. Not only is running the school trickier than they thought, but they must try to solve them murder, while suspecting each other.
Very much a British mystery, the girls encounter comical roadblock after roadblock. Which is, unfortunately, one of my least favorite combo’s. However, I think students will enjoy this read, the characters have fun nicknames which make them stand out, the mystery is interesting, and so are the roadblocks. There is one sentence that precludes me from recommending this for upper elementary school, as it’s a bit mature, and parents may construe it in a negative light. The artwork section at the front really adds to the story and I kept referring back to it as a character reference page.
