The 8th Continent by Matt London - NO

London, Matt The 8th Continent, 219 p. Razorbill (Penguin), 2014.

Evie and Rick’s father is obsessed with rescuing endangered species.  Even if it violates every ordinance created by Winterpole, the corporation that rules the entire world.  When the kids find out that their dad was part of a scientific pair that created a matter converter, they decide they are going to find the other half of the work and make a new continent out of the Great Pacific Garbage Dump - a continent that could not be run by Winterpole.  Standing in their way, however, is their archenemy and tormentor, Vesuvia, who secretly runs her father’s massive corporation and she is determined to steal the technology and make the 8th continent her own.  It makes sense that this was conceived as a children’s computer game, because it is a hot mess that barely holds onto sanity.  While it is similar to the wackiness of Phineas and Ferb, it tops that show in absurdity - the characters are caricatures and the pacing is frenetic and difficult to follow.  It will probably be popular with kids, because I just don’t get it.

NOT RECOMMENDED.  Cindy, Library Teacher
