Sofia Takes the Lead by Doug Cooney-ADVISABLE

Cooney, Doug, ill. by Character Building Studio and the Disney Storybook Art Team. Sofia Takes the Lead. Pgs. 32. Disney Hyperion, 2014. EARLY READER.

Sofia is a Buttercup and this weekend her troop is going camping. All she needs is one more badge to get her Sunflower pin, but her stepdad, King Roland, doesn’t want her to get hurt, so he sends their butler, Baileywick, to protect her. Baileywick used to be a Groundhog, so it appears as if he will be a great help at first. As time goes by, though, he keeps interfering and Sofia can’t get her last badge and pin. Even her friend, Jade gets one before her. Can Sofia and Baileywick see eye to eye? Will Sofia get her pin?

A great adaptation of Sofia the First. The text is just right for the level reader it is. The pictures are colorful and complement the text. In addition, the princess lesson at the end is a great way to teach kids a moral. Recommended for most libraries. EL (K-3). ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
