Hermelin: The Mouse Detective by Mini Grey –OPTIONAL

Grey, Mini Hermelin: The Mouse Detective 32 pgs. Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2014. $17.99 Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G Violence: G. PICTURE BOOK
Hermelin is a little mouse who realizes he can read and write (he types). He has an eye for noticing what’s happening on his street of humans and their pets. After helping solve many mysteries and being dubbed a hero, he is asked to reveal himself. Things don’t go the way he hopes, and he is going to leave, when he gets a special offer.
There is a lot going on in this book, which I think would be confusing for early readers, including many challenging and complicated names and vocabulary. The adorable illustrations and page layout is very busy, which can be fun to discover things on, but in this case, kind of just adds to the confusion of the busy text. I would dread reading this aloud to students, which would have to include a lot of explanations about the illustrations and what a type writer is.  I like the story overall, but I probably wouldn’t pick up a copy for my school library.
