A Bag of Marbles by Joseph Joffo-ADVISABLE

Joffo, Joseph and Kris. Ill. by Vincent Bailly, A Bag of Marbles. Pgs. 126. Graphic Universe, 2014. $26.60. GRAPHIC NOVEL

In 1941, 10-year-old Joseph and Maurice had a hard life. They couldn’t even go to the movie theater. When the two came home from school bloodied and bruised from a schoolyard fight, their parents decided it was time for the two to leave. Their father gave them 10,000 franc and told them to travel to the free zone of southern France. Thus began a dangerous journey by train, foot, and horse and buggy. Through courage and wits, the two brothers stayed one step ahead of the Nazis.

This book tells the true story of their journey. The illustrations are beautifully detailed and are accurate of the time period. Readers interested in World War II stories, adventure, survival, and stories of courage will enjoy reading this graphic novel.
