The Lost (and found) Balloon by Celeste Jenkins - ADVISABLE

Jenkins, Celeste The Lost (and found) Balloon, illustrated by Maria Bogade.  PICTURE BOOK.  Simon & Schuster, 2012.  $17.

A little girl ties a note to a red balloon and send sit off in hopes of making a new friend.  After an epic world journey, her wish is answered - by the little girl who just moved in next door!

I don’t know why I didn’t find this two years ago - it is seriously cute!  Whenever a balloon flies off, the mystery is “where will it land”.  It is the epitome of sending wishes off to heaven.  While I wouldn’t advocate doing the same, this would be a good intro to a short discussion to an environmental unit, or an introduction to pen pals (e-pals?).  The rhyming text floats smoothly across the page and off the tongue - no herky jerky stops and bad rhythms here.
