Dearest by Alethea Kontis - ESSENTIAL

Kontis, Alethea Dearest, 288 p. Houghton Mifflin, FEBRUARY 2015.  $18.  Language: G (1 swear, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (when the enemy arrives, it does get ugly).

When Saturday unleashed the ocean upon her home country, she left devastation in her wake.  Now Sunday, Rumbold, Friday and all of the others must figure out how to care for and feed the new homeless inhabitants.  Enter seven swans, a mute girl, and an impossible task in order to break a curse.  Stir in Kontis’ genius ability to weave in bits and pieces and motifs from a multitude of fantasy worlds.

Serve up a brilliant third edition of a series that will have you reading and re-reading more than once.  My only regret is that we didn’t even get a hint of what was happening with Saturday and Thursday, because this story runs concurrently with the action from Hero.
