The Wizard, the Fairy, and the Magic Chicken by Helen Lester -- ESSENTIAL

Lester, Helen The Wizard, the Fairy and the Magic Chicken: A Story About Teamwork, illustrated by Lynn Munsinger. PICTURE BOOK. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1983. (Reprint, 2014.) $8.99. Content: G.

A wizard, a fairy, and a magic chicken are each other's best friends -- and each other's biggest competitors. When each one tries to outdo the other by making the scariest monster, the results are so terrifying that they all finally agree on one thing: Run! But defeating the monsters isn't that easy. It will require teamwork, the one skill none of the three has yet mastered. Includes a free downloadable audiobook version.

This humorous story about teamwork and one-upmanship is not only fun, but it has a good lesson. Best of all, it makes my four-year-old laugh every time we read it, and I have no doubt it will appeal to my elementary students as well. Because this is a reprint, librarians and teachers may want to check their collections before purchasing in order to avoid unintentional duplicates.
