The Simples Love a Picnic by J.C. Phillipps -- OPTIONAL

Phillipps, J.C. The Simples Love a Picnic. PICTURE BOOK. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2014. $16.99. Content: G.

When the Simples set out for a picnic in the park, they never expect it to be such a disaster. But with squirrels encouraging the family dog to run off, ants crawling everywhere, birds attacking, and Frisbees hitting people in the head, this lunch isn't quite the picnic the family had imagined. No problem! They can just return home and eat on their living room floor instead.

While this book did have a few amusing lines, overall it seemed to paint picnics in a very negative light. In a world where it can be hard enough to get children outside, staying home instead of venturing to the park doesn't seem like something to encourage. The artwork also seemed very rough, although it did have some cute moments.
