Mister Bud Wears the Cone by Carter Goodrich -- OPTIONAL

Goodrich, Carter Mister Bud Wears the Cone. PICTURE BOOK. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2014. $16.99. Content: G.

Mister Bud has a hot spot and so, to his horror, he is forced to wear the cone. Now he can't eat biscuits off the floor, drink his water without knocking over the dish, or see well enough to play chase. His friend Zorro isn't happy, either. The whole routine is messed up, plus Mister Bud is getting all the attention. Just how long does this hot spot have to last, anyway?

As someone who grew up with a dog who had frequent hot spots, I love this book. The illustrations are charming and hilarious, and I sympathize mightily with Mister Bud and even Zorro. For all students who are familiar with a coned-dog's plight, this book would be essential. Those not familiar with hot spots or cones may find themselves lost, however. At the very least, they would likely miss much of the empathetic humor the book is meant to evoke. Because this limits the audience quite a bit, I reluctantly give Mister Bud Wears the Cone a rating of 'optional.'
