Olivia Helps Mother Nature by Lauren Forte -- ESSENTIAL

Forte, Lauren Olivia Helps Mother Nature, illustrated by Jared Osterhold. Simon Spotlight, 2014. $16.99. Content: G.

Olivia is out to help Mother Nature, starting in her very own household. But her campaign hits a few snags when she tries to recycle the newspaper her father is reading and turns out the lights in a room her mother is in. After a little trouble-shooting, though, she learns how to balance her love of the environment with respect for her family members, with just one exception: her brother's night light. Ian can't sleep without it, but lights use precious electricity. Can Olivia and Ian come up with a creative solution that helps the environment and helps Ian sleep?

While the conclusion is far-fetched, Olivia's ingenuity and persistence in finding a solution that is kind to both the environment and her brother sets a good example, as does her dedication to following her convictions. Her actions throughout could spur discussions of small ways in which we can change our daily lives to help the Earth.
