Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi - ESSENTIAL

Rossi, Veronica Into the Still Blue, 389 p. HarperCollins, 2014.  $18.  Language: PG (2 swears, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (torture and shootings, but nothing graphic).

Perry and Aria have moved a small group of Outsiders and Dwellers into a cave system that can protect them temporarily from the Aether storms, which have continued to worsen.  If they don’t find a more permanent solution they will not last but a few more months.  Cinder, the only person who has some control over the Aether,  has been kidnapped by Perry’s rival Sable, who is colluding with Hess, the leader of the Dwellers.  The three way power struggle may leave everyone dead.  Revenge and retribution will do nothing to soften the situation.  It is a last minute, head-long rush for survival.

Rossi manages to create drama and tension without resorting to gratuitous violence.  The romantic relations are there, but play a secondary role to the life-or-death situation.  All together, I am satisfied with the conclusion of the trilogy - and it could very easily be more, because there are so many new story paths to follow.
