Ol’ Mama Squirrel by David Ezra Stein –ADVISABLE

Stein, David Ezra Ol’ Mama Squirrel 32 pgs. Nancy Paulsen Books, 2013. $12.70.  Content: Language: G (0 swears);  Mature Content: G ;  Violence: G.
Ol’ Mama Squirrel is very protective of her babies. She makes sure to “Chook, Chook, Chook” and chase off everything from cats to owls to kites! But one day she faces her biggest challenge –a bear. Will Ol’ Mama Squirrel be able to protect her babies, all by herself?
Filled will adorable illustrations filled with subdued earthy colors, that are a perfect calming counterfoil for the temper of bold squirrel Mama. Both the illustrations and text are presented in a variety of creative ways . There is a wonderful message here as well.  My only qualm is the thought of a read-aloud having to say “Chook, Chook, Chook” one too many times!
