Starring Arabelle by Hillary DeBaun - OPTIONAL

De Baun, Hillary H Starring Arabelle, 243 pgs. Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, 2012. $9.00 Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: G.

Arabelle is excited to start high school, star in the school play and make lots of friends.  But the popular senior who has her locker next to Arabelle informs her that only Seniors and Juniors get parts, and it seems her only friend is Erna Sue, her best friend from middle school.  When she is assigned by her counselor to volunteer at a rest home, Arabelle is sure this is the worst year ever.  But things look up when Boris, the Ukrainian exchange student sits with her at lunch, and she is cast as“prompter and sound effects” in the play.  Maybe her dreams of being a famous actress are starting to come true!

I appreciated the rehearsal stories, and this is a fun novel, however, there were too many stereotypes, and not much depth to any of the characters.   This was a light, fast read.
