Jack and the Baked Bean Stalk by Colin Stimpson –ESSENTIAL

Stimpson, Colin, Jack and the Baked Bean Stalk 40 pgs. Templar, 2012. $12.41.  (Rating: G)
A satirical re-told version of the much loved tale of Jack and the Bean Stalk. Jack and his mom run a cute and popular café, but when the business hits a snag –well, they are broke. When Jack comes home with a can of magical baked beans, his mom has a fit, but Jack believes in the possibility of magic. What Jack sees when he wakes up reminds him of a certain story his knows. Will he find the treasure needed to save his family business?
Stunning, top notch illustrations!I am a big fan of re-tellings, and this one was fantastic! Students will relate to the updated city setting and love that Jack’s loyal dog comes with him on the adventure. I think students will also like that Jack acknowledges that he knows the story of Jack and the Beanstalk –what a great twist!
