Free-Fire Zone by Chris Lynch - OPTIONAL

Lynch, Chris Free-Fire Zone (Vietnam #3), 192 p. Scholastic, NOVEMBER 2012.  Violence: R.

Rudy is a Marine and right in the thick of the Vietnam War.  The people on his patrol know he isn’t the brightest of the bunch, but they keep him along and through thick and thin.  He may not be smart, but he does grow up – A LOT.  Its kind of hard not to when you fight every day to stay alive against an enemy who is implacable in his hatred and very, very cunning and ruthless.  Unlike Morris’ distance in the Navy and Ivan’s sharpshooter role, Rudy’s experience and very in-your-face and very, very bloody.  I am mystified why this is recommended for grades 5 – 9.  I just can’t do it.  Reluctant high school readers, but NOT elementary or middle.  Can’t.
