Caddy Ever After by Hilary McKay - ESSENTIAL

McKay, Hilary. Caddy Ever After, 218 pgs. Margaret K. McElderry Books (Simon & Schuster), 2012 (2006). $16.99. Sexual Content: G; Language: G; Violence: G.  This reprint has a fantastic new cover that will no doubt create more fans for the Casson's—everyone’s favorite dysfunctional family. The irrepressible Permanent Rose is the main narrator of the story; however the other three Casson children help. Rose pees her pants at school after hearing one of her best friend Kiran’s scary stories about one of her innumerable relatives. Indigo takes over the Valentine’s school dance and determines couples based on different criteria, such as their shoelaces. Oscar, Saffron’s new boyfriend, takes her and Rose out in his car that breaks down. His cousin Alex comes to the rescue. Alex meets Caddy (the oldest Casson) is bowled out by her beauty. They become engaged and Sarah’s mom plans everything, because of course their artistic mummy Eve couldn’t handle the finite details. Rose previously promised Darling Michael, Caddy’s old boyfriend that she would take care of Caddy for him…and she does. The wedding scene is one of the funniest I have ever read in children’s fiction and I could not stop laughing. Positively a comic delight. EL – ESSENTIAL. Samantha Hastings, MA, MLS.
