Calvin Coconut: Kung Fooey by Graham Salisbury –ADVISABLE

Salisbury, Graham and illustrated by Rogers, Jacqueline Calvin Coconut: Kung Fooey 144 pgs. Wendy Lamb Books 2011. $11.04. (Language-G Violence-PG; Sexual Content-G).
Calvin isn’t sure he likes the new kid in his fourth grade class at school. Benni brags a ton, eats bugs, and is just sort of socially awkward. Calvin and his friends try to be nice to him, but don’t really invite him into their group. When the school bully’s take on Benni, Benni runs. When he doesn’t come back to school Calvin has to face some truths about friendship and bullying.
I loved this book! Despite being part of a series, it functions perfectly as a stand alone. Calvin is a completely authentic character. The story was multi-faceted without being too confusing. There were even some life lessons here but they presented so subtly that the delivery was seamless. The story felt modern and fresh without trying too hard. I think students would love to get to know this fun character! I look forward to reading other books in the series.
