The Revenant by Sonia Gensler -ADVISABLE

Gensler, Sonia The Revenant: Some secrets won’t stay buried, 336 pgs Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2011. $13.25. (Rating: G all around)
Willie is a young woman who makes a dramatic change in her life by taking a chance. She moves to Indian Territory to be a teacher. When she arrives at the Cherokee Female Seminary, Willie is a bit overwhelmed and realizes that things are going to be tougher than she imagined. She is given the room of a recently dead student, whose mysterious death is at the forefront of everyone’s minds, since they think she is haunting the school. Willie soon becomes a central piece in the mystery and finds herself in more danger than she can imagine.
This was a great period piece of supernatural fiction. This could have easily been just a plain fictional story, about learning to teach and overcome preconceived notions -but the supernatural thread adds drama and depth to the setting. Students will love the way Willie must fake her teaching skills. But thanks to the mystery, students will not be able to put this book down.
