Double Play! by Betsy Franco - ADVISABLE

Double Play: Monkeying Around with AdditionFranco, Betsy Double Play, illustrated by Doug Cushman. Tricycle Press, 2011. $15.99. PICTURE BOOK.  When the recess bell rings, Jill and Jake head out to the playground to have fun together.  The book then tells about their fun at recess, and it also lets the reader practice a little math.  For example, the first addition problem is "1 friend + 1 friend = 2 friends" and the second one is "2 knees + 2 knees = 4 knees".  Finally, the bell rings to return to the class and recess and the book end.  I really enjoyed this book.  Now, don't get me wrong; it's not Scieszka's The Math Curse, which is for older readers, but it is cute and a good math primer for young readers and learners.  It's perfect because it works on both literacy and numeracy.  Pre-K, EL(K-3) - ADVISABLE. Brent Smith, Reading Teacher.
