The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch –ESSENTIAL

Hirsch, Jeff The Eleventh Plauge, 304 pgs. Scholastic Press, 2011. $11.00. Language-G (Swear Count: 0); Violence-PG; Sexual Content-G).
Steven is born into a future where our civilization has been destroyed by plague and war. He only knows of the wonders of the past through stories and by the shattered remnants that surround him. A snap decision by his father, finds a now teenage Steven, alone in a world new to him. He is used to traveling and scavenging and hiding. But Settler’s Landing is a fixed community that almost feels secure and safe. The people there take care of each other. When Steven takes part in a prank, he might be part of bringing down the best place he has ever known.
Our world and our ‘modern’ society are a fragile system and the possibility that the world will change sometime soon is both an interesting and vital theme to explore. This story provides a well rounded sense of the past, present, and thoughts about the future. Steven’s story is engaging and interesting.
