A Not Scary Story About Big Scary Things by C.K. Williams- OPTIONAL

Williams, C.K. Swiatkowska, Gabi. A Not Scary Story About Big Scary Things, 32 pgs. Harcourt Children's Books, 2010. $16.99. Language-G; Violence-G; Sexual Content-G. Inside cover: “Bears are real- they growl! Wolves are real- they howl! Snakes are real too- they hiss. But what about a monster that jumps out at you and goes “Rrowll?” Its claws are BIG! Its tail is PRICKLY! And its fangs are SHARP! Could it be real? One boy doesn’t think so. Could he be right?” We didn’t love this book. When we finished reading it, both my kids looked at each other and said, “Weird!” The storyline probably made sense at one point, but the execution simply didn’t work for us. The illustration weren’t “inviting” either. The only thing we did like was the idea that the boy had control over his fears of monsters. EL (K-3). OPTIONAL. Reviewer: SL
