Huntress by Malinda Lo - OPTIONAL

Lo, Malinda Huntress, pgs. 371 Little, Brown, 2011. $17.99. Language-G; Mature Content-PG-13; Violence-PG-13; When Kaede and Taisin are joined together for a quest that might save the land, they don't really know what to expect. There's, Kaede, who is a horrible sage in training, and Taisin, a wonderful one, who barely know each other but have to work together to survive. Can they complete the quest and ignore their feelings for each other? I didn't particularly like this book. Maybe it was that Kaede and Taisin were both girls who were falling in love with each other that turned me off, or that the author mixed fairies and unicorns in with B.C. times and Chinese adventure. The ideas just don't mesh well together. I think that the author should have had a name for the country or if it was China, stated that fact. MS-HS-OPTIONAL. Student Reviewer: K.B.
NOTE: I did talk to the student about the Mature Content of the book – if the characters had been heterosexual, she would have only rated it PG.  Please remember that this is this student's impression of the book.  If you have positive information to add about why you loved this book more than she did, please leave a comment.
