Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell

McDonnell, Patrick Me…Jane, 40 pgs. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2011. $10.66. PICTURE BOOK.CURRICULUM CONNECTION.

This picture book with simple text provides a window into the childhood of a young Jane Goodall, the famous primatologist (among other things). Young Jane is presented with a gift of a chimpanzee stuffed animal named Jubilee, who comes along for adventures as Jane discovers her interest in nature and her love of Africa and its animals. They have a wonderful bond and do everything together. Included are photographs of the real Jane and her very own Jubilee and some other fun extras.
Easy to read and wonderful artwork. The story itself is incredibly sweet and the message is profound –even a simple gift can inspire and even a distant dream can come true. Me…Jane is a great jumping off point for lessons ranging from future careers to environmentalism to female role models. A bit more meat to the story would have made my rating go up to Essential, but it comes very close.

K-3 –ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Stephanie MLS graduate.
